How the circle calculator works

Area = πr².

Circumference = 2πr.

Diameter = 2r — twice the radius, and the value most often confused with the radius itself in word problems.

Worked example: radius 7

  1. Area = π × 7² = π × 49 ≈ 153.94.
  2. Circumference = 2 × π × 7 ≈ 43.98.
  3. Diameter = 2 × 7 = 14.

Common mistakes to avoid

Entering the diameter where radius is expected

This tool takes the radius. Entering a diameter directly overstates the area by a factor of 4, since area scales with the square of whatever length is entered.

Mixing up area and circumference units

Area is in square units (like cm²) while circumference is a plain length (cm) — reporting one with the other's unit is a common but easy-to-catch labelling mistake.

How do I find the area if I only know the diameter?

Divide the diameter by 2 to get the radius first, then enter that radius here — or compute area directly as π × (diameter/2)².

Why is π involved in both area and circumference?

π is the fixed ratio between any circle's circumference and its diameter — it shows up in area too because area is built from the same radius that defines circumference.

What's a practical use for knowing circumference specifically?
