How the power calculator works

P = W ÷ t, where W is work or energy in joules and t is time in seconds, giving power in watts.

Worked example: 5,000 J of work in 20 seconds

  1. P = 5,000 ÷ 20 = 250 W.
  2. The same 5,000 J done in just 2 seconds instead would be 2,500 W — ten times the power, for the identical amount of work.

Common mistakes to avoid

Confusing power with total energy

Power is a rate (energy per second); energy itself is the total amount done, regardless of how fast. A low-power device running for a long time can still deliver more total energy than a high-power device running briefly.

Mixing units — kilojoules or minutes without converting

This formula expects joules and seconds directly. Entering work in kilojoules or time in minutes without converting first will overstate or understate the result by that same factor.

Convert to joules first (1 calorie ≈ 4.184 joules) since the formula here assumes joules as the energy unit.

Why does power matter separately from total energy in engineering?

Equipment (motors, cables, batteries) is rated by the power it can handle at any instant, not just total energy over time — undersizing for peak power, even briefly, can damage components even if average energy use is fine.
