How the travel cost calculator works
Total = travel cost + (stay per night × nights) + (daily spend × (nights + 1)).
The '+1' on daily spend accounts for the arrival day, which involves daily spending but isn't a full night's stay counted separately.
Worked example: 8,000 travel, 3,500/night, 4 nights, 1,500/day
- Accommodation = 3,500 × 4 = 14,000.
- Daily spend = 1,500 × (4+1) = 1,500 × 5 = 7,500.
- Total = 8,000 + 14,000 + 7,500 = 29,500.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming daily spend multiplies by nights, not nights+1
A 4-night trip actually spans 5 days (arrival day through departure day), so daily spending applies to 5 days, not 4 — this calculator deliberately builds in that extra day, which is easy to under-budget for by hand.
Forgetting return travel if only one-way travel cost was entered
If 'travel cost' only covers the outbound journey, remember to include the return leg too, either by doubling that figure or entering the full round-trip cost directly.

Why does the calculator add one extra day to the nights for daily spend?
A trip of 'n nights' actually covers n+1 days of activity, meals and incidentals — from the arrival day through the departure day — so budgeting only for the number of nights understates real daily spending.
Does this include big one-off purchases like souvenirs or activities?
Only if you fold them into the daily spend estimate — for major planned expenses, it's more accurate to add them as a separate line rather than averaging them into daily spend.
How should I estimate daily spend if I've never been to the destination?
Research typical costs for meals, local transport and casual spending at that destination specifically — costs vary enormously by country and city, far more than most people initially assume.
Can this handle a trip with varying accommodation costs across different nights?
Not directly — this uses one flat per-night rate. For trips with different accommodation costs on different nights, calculate accommodation separately and add it to travel and daily-spend totals by hand.
