How the typing speed calculator works

Gross WPM = words typed ÷ minutes taken.

Net WPM = gross WPM − (errors ÷ minutes taken), effectively subtracting an error penalty rate from the raw typing speed.

Worked example: 320 words typed in 5 minutes, with 8 errors

  1. Gross WPM = 320 ÷ 5 = 64 WPM.
  2. Error penalty rate = 8 ÷ 5 = 1.6 WPM.
  3. Net WPM = 64 − 1.6 = 62.4, rounding to 62 WPM net.
